Gas Training Courses Gas Industry Entry Levels To work in the Gas Industry legally, a person must prove their competence by completing the necessary ACS Assessments with the initial assessment being the Core Domestic Gas Safety (CCN1). After this, a person can move on to complete ACS Assessments on the Gas Appliances that they wish to work on.
For a person to be eligible to complete ACS Assessments he or she must fit into one of the following categories:
EXPERIENCED GAS ENGINEER
A person who has previously undertaken ACS and can produce a certificate of competence as proof and wishes to renew their qualification. This person can carry out ACS with or without training.
NEW ENTRANT WITH TRANSFERABLE SKILLS OR EXPERIENCE
A person who holds an associated qualification such as a C&G or NVQ in Plumbing, Pipe Fitting, Mechanical Engineering etc, or a person who is currently undertaking gas work under the supervision of a Gas Safe Engineer. This person would require the PLUMBER TO GAS Course, or an Abridged version of the PG1 (after initial Interview/consultation).
NEW ENTRANT WITHOUT TRANSFERABLE SKILLS OR EXPERIENCE
A person who is wishing to retrain for a career change, has some plumbing skills/Qualifications.
Courses
PG1 Course (New Entrants) The PG1 Course is designed to enable people with no formal Gas or Plumbing qualifications to enter the Gas Industry. The training is flexible, to allow the learner to carry it out around their current employment or day to day duties. The course covers training on all of the 15 Core Competencies required for ACS Core Domestic Gas Safety (CCN1) and the Flue Gas Analyser element (CPA1) or (CMA1) for Domestic Meter Candidates. The successful learner will then complete Appliance elements:- For example, a person who is intending to work on a Gas Meter Exchange Programme would carry out MET1 (Meters). A person wishing to work on Cookers (kitchen fitter) would carry out CKR1, to work on Central Heating (CENWAT) etc. A person wishing to carry out all of the appliance elements may be able to do so after completing the PG1 Course, providing they have gained sufficient experience whilst completing their on-the-job training. The Course is split into four sections, which can be carried out at different times. The course includes ongoing Assessments to ensure that the candidate is building knowledge and competence, and an on-the-job training programme to enable the learner to gain valuable practical experience. You can reach your desired level of competence within 8 to 8 1/2 months.
Split into four sections so that you can complete it whilst continuing to work. Pay in 3 instalments*
Part A (Theory & Practical) Three weeks intensive training covering all aspects of theory relating to the subjects listed below. Some home study may be required during this section, depending on the learners existing knowledge and ability to learn. Includes Ongoing Assessments.
Gas Pipe-work Gas Metering Tightness Testing Working Pressures Gas Safety Regulations & Use (1998) Characteristics of Combustion Gas Rating Unsafe Situations Burner Pressures Flue testing Spillage Testing
Part B On-the-job Training Programme (Portfolio) ECS provide the learner with a portfolio, along with full instruction of how to complete it. The learner gathers the evidence whilst under the supervision of a Gas Safe Registered Engineer (s).
ECS will monitor your portfolio building FREE OF CHARGE! If the learner has access to Gas Engineer's - great!. However, if the learner is unable to find an engineer, don't worry we've got you covered! ECS has established a database of Portfolio Engineers that provide this service. We can provide Gas Engineer contacts. Most engineers will require a fee to provide this service, this is negotiated individually with the engineer, but typically about £15 to £20 per job.
There is a minimum time period of six months to gather evidence to build a portfolio, and there are a minimum number of tasks to be completed. Some learners may already have completed some of these tasks, and may be able to enter this evidence into their portfolio (at the discretion of the centre). The portfolio must be completed before a learner can be accepted onto Pathway and ACS Assessment.
Part C (Theory & Practical) Up to 3 days training & Pathway to Gas Assessment. Some home study may be required during this section, depending on the learners existing knowledge and ability to learn.
Part D (ACS Assessments) On successful completion of the PG1 New Entrant's Course, the learner will be awarded a 'Pathway' Certificate for their achievement. At this stage you will be confident and competent, and thus allowed entry for your ACS Assessments.
CCN1 Core Competencies CC1 Gas Safety legislation CC2 Gas Emergency Actions & Procedures CC3 Combustion CC4 Ventilation CC5 Installation of Pipe-work & Fittings CC6 Testing for Tightness CC7 Checking Meter Regulators CC8 Identification of unsafe situations, Emergency Notices & Labels CC9 The operation & positioning of Emergency Controls & Valves CC10 Checking & Setting of appliance Gas Safety Devices & Controls CC11 The operation of appliance Gas Safety Controls CC12 Fluing Standards CC13 Flue Testing CC14 Installation of Open, Balanced & Fan Assisted Flue Assemblies CC15 Re-establish gas supply and re-light appliances Plumber to Gas Course This Course is designed for people who already work in the Gas or Plumbing Industry and have some experience. The candidate must hold an NVQ Level II in Plumbing or an associated trade, and ECS will check your qualifications to find out if they are suitable. Prior to starting the course, the candidate must also prove that they have worked in the Industry under the supervision of a Registered Gas Engineer and gained substantial experience. This can be by means of a portfolio of evidence, or a confirmation letter from the engineer or company with whom they have gained their experience. The course is flexible and can be worked around your current day to day employment or duties.
The length of the course depends on how much knowledge and experience that you already have. We start by holding an initial interview, which will take approximately 10-15 minutes, and it will allow us to assess how much you know. The average length of a course is normally four days Training followed by four days Assessment. Some candidates have completed the whole Training and Assessment in as little as Five Days!
Course Content Includes Theory & Practical Training on:
Flues & Ventilation Combustion Testing Procedures Gas Rating and Burner Pressures Familiarisation with Industry reference material Safe Use of the Flue Gas Analyser Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS)
